Adoption

Many women feel that they could not even consider adoption. How could they go through pregnancy and birth to give their baby away? But adoption can be a positive choice to give your baby the best, showing that you care for them and want them to have what you cannot give them at the moment. You can know that you have done all you can for your baby and given them a good start in life. Studies show that most adoptions work out happily.

What happens in adoption?

  • You can say what sort of people you would like your child to have as parents.
  • You can know as much or little about the adoptive family as you wish.
  • Your child can have a life book which tells them all about you so that, as they grow up, they can know where they came from.
  • You can keep in touch through the social services or adoption agency.
  • A social worker can visit you to help you start thinking about adoption. You do not have to decide straight away.
  • The baby would go to foster parents for 6 weeks after birth, and you are allowed to visit.
  • When the baby goes to the adoptive family, they can apply for an adoption order after 3 months.
  • You do not have to go to court, you just have to sign a court document agreeing to the adoption.
  • Once an adoption order is made in court, it can not be changed.

Placing your baby for adoption would not be an easy decision, but it can be a responsible, mature choice. It could be a way of giving your baby life, if that seems important, even when you are not in a position to be a parent.

We at CedarOak would be happy to talk to you further about adoption and, if appropriate, to support you along the road to considering adoption for as long as you needed.
