Making a decision

I think I am pregnant?
I've done a test to confirm it
and the test is positive.

You may well be feeling shocked & confused. Maybe you just want it sorted out, and wish you could go back to before you were pregnant. Whatever you are feeling at the moment you need to remember that nothing can change the fact of your pregnancy, you can only now move on and make a decision that you will be able to live with.

What are my choices?

When you have had time for the news to sink in you need to sit down and really think about the way ahead, with your partner or someone else you can trust.

You need to sit down and think about the way ahead. You may be feeling pressurised, or you may feel that there is only one choice and you don’t have time to think about it all. But the decision you have to make could be one of the most important you’ll ever make, so give yourself time. Try to listen to your real feelings and not the panic. If you act against your personal values, and the way you’ve always felt about something, then you may well experience guilt at a later stage, which can lead to its own problems.

Try thinking some of these questions through, not just in terms of money or time, but also thinking about things like your peace of mind and how your relationships may be affected. It may help to write some thoughts down and look at the pages on adoption and abortion.

  • What makes a pregnancy difficult at the moment?
  • What will I lose or gain if I have an abortion?
  • What will I lose or gain if I keep the baby?
  • What will I lose or gain if I have the baby adopted?
  • look at the lists you have made and see if all the things are equally important, do all those things really make a big difference in your life?

These are complicated choices you have to make, and only you are in a position to provide the answers, but it may be helpful to have someone outside the situation who can help you think it all through. CedarOak provides trained counsellors in a relaxed setting who would be more than happy to help you think about the way ahead. Do contact us.
