Men and pregnancy

Have you just found out that your partner is pregnant? Are you still feeling shocked and wondering what to do?

It is important for you both to think about the way forward. She needs to know how you feel too.

What can you do?

  • Men often do not know how to help and it may seem that you do not have a role to play in making the decision.
  • Your partner may feel that it is her “right to choose”.
  • You may feel quite left out or perhaps you are glad not to have to be responsible for the decision.
  • You may feel that it is up to your partner what she does.

Men often say “I’ll support you whatever your choose”. This seems to be a loving thing to say but this can leave your partner feeling the responsibility of making a difficult decision without being able to share it. Few women want to make a choice without their partner’s full support.

Some men are pleased when they first find out their partner is pregnant, but then the pressure of circumstances can take over

  • maybe you are not sure if your relationship is strong enough
  • perhaps the thought of the responsibility for a child is just too much at the moment
  • you could be worried about how to cope financially
  • this is just not what you planned for your life!

It is important that you as well as your partner think through the three options that are available to you (more detail available on the other pages)

This is a time when it is important to really be honest with one another about how you are feeling. Try to work with your partner to reach the best decision. Your partner needs to know what you think and feel and whether you can be there for her.

None of the options are easy and nothing can make things how they were before the pregnancy, but try to find a way forward together.

You can feel as if decisions have to be made very quickly, but make sure that you have all the relevant information so that you can make a proper choice about parenting, adoption or abortion.

At CedarOak we are happy to spend time with you thinking about your situation to help you reach a decision.
